At the Post Office

In taking care of some last-minute business before our move, I found myself at our local post office with eighteen pounds of granola to mail.

Now, the post office is about a city block away from where we live, so I walked over.  Carrying EIGHTEEN POUNDS OF GRANOLA.  While wearing flip flops (stupid - if you ever find yourself wandering through town in the heat of the day carrying EIGHTEEN POUNDS OF GRANOLA, be sure to wear something other than flip flops).  The granola followed Alan's favourite rule of physics, which states: everything gets heavier the longer you carry it.

Arriving in the post office, I dropped the box onto the counter and panted a bit.

The young lady working there said, "Do you want to mail that?"

I nodded.

"Oh," she said.  "It's just.... I don't know how."

I checked to make sure I hadn't wandered into the variety store, or Music by mistake.  Nope.  I was in the post office.  With EIGHTEEN POUNDS OF GRANOLA that I couldn't mail because the post office employee didn't actually know how to mail things.

I picked up my EIGHTEEN POUNDS OF GRANOLA and walked back home.  In my flip flops.  Wondering how it is that she has a job in air-conditioned comfort and I'm stuck working in a cheese factory....

I'll be taking a blogging break while we move and get internet connections sorted out at the new place.  See you back here August 18.

Oh I love this happens to me all the time! we had a new girl at the post office and she kept saying we couldn't mail things that we mail every week- the guy next to her kept saying-"Actually you can do that" in the end my husband had to say "perhaps you should check first after all you would want to look stupid, would you?" a bit harsh I know but its not brain surgery is it? Hope the move goes well!

Good for your husband - I'm never quite brave enough to say the things that run through my head.

"the computer won't let me" is the modern replacement for "I don't know how".
Good luck with the move.

Ha ha ha. Sounds like Canada Post to me...

Sad thing is, Pierre, the computer really won't let them. And they have no idea how to override it...

And, yes, it was, indeed, Canada Post, or a privatized subsidiary thereof...
