S is for Shnucking

Twice now, we have taken one of our nieces with us on a trip to Paris.  And we hope to do it again, at least a couple of times.

The downside to living in Canada is that getting to most of the rest of the world is such a massive undertaking.  It's all just so far away.  And since we economize on the plane tickets as much as possible, the trip there and back can be more of an adventure than it needs to be.

On one of these trips, the niece in question arrived in Paris very tired.  It took a couple of days to get her strength back.  Until then, she was very quiet.

And then one day, some mention was made of something and she seemed to wake up.

"OHMYGOD.  DID YOU HEAR THAT GUY ON THE PLANE?  HE SHNUCKED FOR THE ENTIRE SEVEN HOURS.  SITTING RIGHT NEXT TO ME JUST SHNUCKING AND SHNUCKING AND SHNUCKING.  HE SHOULD HAVE BEEN THROWN OFF THE  PLANE FOR THAT. HONESTLY THERE'S NO EXCUSE FOR THAT KIND OF BEHAVIOUR.  IF I GET STUCK NEXT TO SOMEONE LIKE THAT ON THE WAY HOME I'M LEAVING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

We'd been sitting, the three of us, in the four-seat middle section.  She was at the far end, next to a total stranger.  My hand went up, and when the flow of words had slowed down, I was acknowledged by the floor.

"Point of order.  Shnucking?"

"EWWWW!  IT'S WHEN YOUR NOSE IS RUNNING AND INSTEAD OF USING A KLEENEX LIKE A NORMAL PERSON, YOU.... YOU.... YOU SUCK IT BACK IN IT'S THE MOST DISGUSTING HABIT ON EARTH HE SHOULD HAVE BEEN THROWN OFF THE PLANE!"

"Over the mid-Atlantic?"

"YES"

Now, this girl is, normally, the mildest of creatures, with a love in her heart for all humanity.

Unless they shnuck.

I think we've all got it, the one thing we just can't handle, the weird little quirk guaranteed to put us over the edge, no matter how hard we try to tough it out.

I know mine (and maybe one day I'll tell you the story).  What's yours?

Oh, dear, she'd hate me. I find myself schucking from time to time. Alas!

I forgot to tell you one of mine. Teeth grinding. Ohmigod I want to scream and die when my 5-year-old just grinds and grinds and grinds and won't stop. Her dentist says that it's normal and there's nothing we can do.

I find that leaving and taking solo walks in the freezing cold without a coat takes my mind off things for a while.

There's nothing like freezing your tuckus off to take your mind off things...

And she must never visit our house during cold season!

I start a story in the middle. I tend to ramble and get no where. I know this, and I can't stop it.... Bad habit.

Oh, I think we can just call this one a charming quirk.

As long as you promise not to shnuck or grind your teeth while doing it!
